If ever there were one single icon or symbol that encompasses the total
strength and resolve of Des Moines Tech, it would be the gear, like the one depicted in
the Tech High Emblem. With a simplistic design, its function is the transfer of power. By
it's nature, it is hewn from strong materials for heavy work. Its faceted teeth are
precisely honed to mesh with other gears. The best use of a gear requires movement, never
to stand stagnant, rather to act as a conduit of energy. And so it is with what was Des
Moines Technical High School. The body of the gear can be thought of as the solid
education provided by the teachers, tradesmen, and craftsmen using the equipment and
facilities at Tech. The gear's teeth represent the 14,000 Alumni. A tooth for each
student, and each tooth polished with the knowledge and employable skills of a profession.
Each tooth precisely honed to fit the recesses of another gear, those of business,
industry, government, or to return to education. The function was to allow knowledge to
pass from professional to student and from student to the workplace with the benefits of
gainful employment.
As pleasant as it would be to have such an icon,
the complex interaction between education, apprenticeship, Coop, sports, and student life
makes it impossible to illustrate. We are fortunate that just two words portrays it all
very nicely - Tech Spirit.
